âť—Need to know
- Required before starting: Be able to swim
- Equipment needed:
- SUP - 8-9ft+ foam or hardtop board with leash and paddle, 4/3mm wetsuit (not required if you don’t fall in), watertight bag, sun protection
- Kayaking - singles or double kayak, paddle, PFD (lifejacket), sun protection, watertight bag
- Approximate cost: ~$40-65 for 2 hours for both kayaks or SUPs, location depending for rentals
- Water temp: The water is COLD. You’re not going to love falling in, but on a hot day, splashing is fun! Wind makes the balancing act a bit tougher - it’s windiest in the bay over the summer (May-August)
- Have fun! Kayaking and SUPing can be vary from a meditative activity to full workout. Figure out what works for you, and just go for fun!
⏱️ When to go
The beauty of paddling is it’s a year round activity. If the wind is calm, and you want to paddle, generally it’s a good time to go! Check out Tomales Bay or Moss Landing near Monterey for their bioluminescence night time paddles: I promise these are not to be missed!
🚣 Where to go
The Bay has SO MUCH WATER to explore! This is not an exhaustive list of places to check out, but enough to get started. Ask your VP of water sports if you think there’s something miss:
1. Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary OR Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserve
Travel time: 1.5-2.5hrs drive from Berkeley
Rental Agency: Monterey Bay Kayaks
